Fort Laramie Treaty

In this treaty, signed on April 29, 1868, between the U.S. Government and the Sioux Nation, the United States recognized the Black Hills as part of the Great Sioux Reservation, set aside for exclusive use by the Sioux people.

And then in 1876 promptly discovered gold in the Black Hills and there went the neighborhood, and the Ft Laramie Treaty with it.

From 1923 to 1980 the Supreme Court thought about their stealing of the Black Hills, and after 57 years of doing nothing about it, finally decided to pay the Lakotas what the Black Hills would have been worth in 1876 - that was $17.5 million bucks. Every year, the offer grows - it must be in the billions of dollars now - but the Lakotas do not accept the money. They want the Black Hills back.
