Buchanan, ambassador to the United Kingdom (nicknamed “Old Buck”), was the Democratic Party candidate, along with his vice presidential nominee, John C. Breckinridge.

Buchanan defeated Republican candidate John C. Frémont and Former President Millard Fillmore, now represernting the “Know Nothing Party.”

Ah, James Buchanan. The fellow who did absolutely nothing to stop the country from falling to pieces. But of course he campaigned like he was a badass. 

Elks approve. All president’s need the approval of the elks before they can be president. Obviously.
